What is this medicine used for?

Metformin is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin.

How much and how often should you use this medicine?

• 150 mg to 300 mg once daily. The usual recommended initial and maintenance dose is 150 mg once daily.
• In hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients: 150 mg-300 mg once daily or as prescribed by the physician.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Metformin HCI or to any ingredient in the product.
• Unstable and/or type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus.
• History of lactic acidosis irrespective of precipitating factors.
• Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, with or without coma. Treat diabetic ketoacidosis with insulin.
• Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
• Acute conditions with the potential to alter renal function such as:
  • Dehydration due to persistent or severe diarrhea, recurring vomiting.
  • Severe infection.
  • Diagnostic examinations (e.g. intravenous urography, angiography) involving iodinated contrast agents/media.
• Acute or chronic diseases causing tissue hypoxia such as:
  • Cardiac or respiratory failure.
  • Recent myocardial infarction.
  • Shock.
• Acute or chronic alcoholism.
• Severe liver disease.
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding.

• Radiological Studies.
• Hypoxic States.
• Impaired Hepatic Function.
• Alcohol.
• Vitamin B Levels.
• Hypoglycemia.
• Maintaining Adequate Glycemic Control during periods of stress.
• Effects on Ability to Drive and use Machines.
